Tank Rotation & Cooldowns (5.4)
Maintaining a proper Rotation and using the right Cooldowns is essential to maximizing your Protection Paladin. Use this guide to optimize your single target and AoE rotations while learning how to get the most out of your cooldowns.
Single Target Rotation
Buffs: Maintain these buffs at all times.
Tanking Priority: Execute this priority to build Holy Power and threat.
- Crusader Strike on cooldown. Generates Holy Power and applies Weakened Blows.
- Judgment on cooldown. Generates Holy Power.
- Avengers Shield with or without Grand Crusader.
- Holy Prism on cooldown.
- Holy Wrath on cooldown.
- Hammer of Wrath when target is below 20% Health.
- Consecration on cooldown.
Active Mitigation: Consume Holy Power with these skills to mitigate damage.
The key to the Protection Paladin tanking priority is to maximize your Holy Power generation so that you can spend it on Shield of The Righteous and Eternal Flame as often as possible.
You will build Holy Power by using Crusader Strike and Judgment on cooldown. Prioritize Avengers Shield when Grand Crusader procs. Your next priority is to use Holy Prism, Holy Wrath, Hammer of Wrath, and Consecration as time and Mana allows.
The choice between spending Holy Power on Shield of The Righteous and Eternal Flame depends on the specific encounter. Shield of The Righteous is your go-to Holy Power spender and should be maintained as much as possible to reduce physical damage taken, but may be delayed by a few sec to line up with periods of high incoming melee damage. Eternal Flame is a strong self-heal that should be used as often as Holy Power allows. It is okay to save a full stack of Bastion of Glory for a large Eternal Flame if you expect to take a high amount of damage.
Tanking multiple targets basically follows the single target priority except you replace Crusader Strike with Hammer of The Righteous. Use Avengers Shield and Consecration as much as possible. Seal of Righteousness replaces Seal of Truth for AoE tanking.
These effective cooldowns are available if you chose them in your talent build.
These are effective cooldowns to try and incorporate into most all encounters.
