DPS Rotation & Cooldowns for Frost Mage in PvE | Latest Patch 6.2.4

Select a gear item level to improve the accuracy and relevancy of this guide.

The following rotation guide was developed through extensive simulations and play testing with the goal of keeping the guide as simple as possible without sacrificing performance. This guide also included AoE rotations and provides details on when to use special talents and cooldowns.

Single Target Rotation

DPS Priority: Execute the following priority for optimal DPS.

  1. Frozen Orb to proc Fingers of Frost.
  2. Water Jet but not while Frozen Orb is active.
  3. Ice Lance with 1-2 Fingers of Frost and Frozen Orb.
  4. Frostfire Bolt with Brain Freeze.
  5. Frostbolt as a filler spell and to proc Brain Freeze.

The key to the Frost DPS rotation is to properly manage two procs: Fingers of Frost and Brain Freeze. Generating Fingers of Frost is your top priority and you should cast Frozen Orb on cooldown to proc Fingers of Frost. You may also use your Summon Water Elemental's Water Jet to help proc Fingers of Frost, but only when your Frozen Orb is not active. Now, consume your Fingers of Frost with Ice Lance when you have 1-2 stacks and Frozen Orb is still active on the target. Then, watch for Brain Freeze procs and consume them with Frostfire Bolt. Finally, cast Frostbolt as a filler spec and to proc Brain Freeze.

AoE Rotation

To execuse the Frost Mage AoE rotation, cast Frozen Orb on cooldown to proc Fingers of Frost. Consume Fingers of Frost with Ice Lance and cast Cone of Cold on cooldown. Use Blizzard as a filler ability when Frozen Orb and Cone of Cold are on cooldown.

Below is advice on how to use the performance-enhancing talents that were selected in this guide.

  • Unstable Magic is entirely passive and does not require any changes to your rotation.
  • Rune of Power requires that you stand within the rune and recast Rune of Power as it is about to expire.
  • Prismatic Crystal creates a crystal that, when attacked, deals area damage. You should summon the crystal as often as possible and apply as much burst damage as possible to it including using your DPS cooldown.

Effective Cooldowns

These are effective cooldowns to try and incorporate into most all encounters.

  • Deep Freeze Use on non-boss targets to increase the damage of Ice Lance.
  • Icy Veins Use as often as possible. Stack with other DPS buffs.
  • Time Warp Use as directed by your raid or party leader.
