DPS Rotation & Cooldowns for Frost Mage in PvE | Latest Patch 6.0.3

Select a gear item level to improve the accuracy and relevancy of this guide.

The following rotation guide was developed through extensive simulations and play testing with the goal of keeping the guide as simple as possible without sacrificing performance. This guide also included AoE rotations and provides details on when to use special talents and cooldowns.

Single Target Rotation

DPS Priority: Execute the following priority for optimal DPS.

  1. Frozen Orb to proc Fingers of Frost.
  2. Ice Lance with 1-2 Fingers of Frost and Frozen Orb.
  3. Frostfire Bolt with Brain Freeze.
  4. Frostbolt as a filler spell and to proc Brain Freeze.

The key to the Frost DPS rotation is to properly manage two procs: Fingers of Frost and Brain Freeze. Generating Fingers of Frost is your top priority and you should cast Frozen Orb on cooldown to proc Fingers of Frost. After that, consume your Fingers of Frost with Ice Lance when you have 1-2 stacks and Frozen Orb is still active on the target. Then, watch for Brain Freeze procs and consume them with Frostfire Bolt. Finally, cast Frostbolt as a filler spec and to proc Brain Freeze.

AoE Rotation

To execuse the Frost Mage AoE rotation, cast Frozen Orb on cooldown to proc Fingers of Frost. Consume Fingers of Frost with Ice Lance and cast Cone of Cold on cooldown. Use Blizzard as a filler ability when Frozen Orb and Cone of Cold are on cooldown.

Talents

Below is advice on how to use the performance-enhancing talents that were selected in this guide.

  • Ice Nova should be cast on cooldown to prevent charges from being wasted. However, if you need to deal additional burst damage then you can let the charges stack and cast Ice Nova twice in a row. Use this ability in both your single target and AoE rotations.
  • Mirror Image should be used as often as possible for burst damage. Try to stack with other major DPS cooldowns.

Effective Cooldowns

These are effective cooldowns to try and incorporate into most all encounters.

  • Deep Freeze Use on non-boss targets to increase the damage of Ice Lance.
  • Icy Veins Use as often as possible. Stack with other DPS buffs.
  • Time Warp Use as directed by your raid or party leader.
