DPS Rotation & Cooldowns for Arcane Mage in PvE | Latest Patch 6.0.3

Select a gear item level to improve the accuracy and relevancy of this guide.

The following rotation guide was developed through extensive simulations and play testing with the goal of keeping the guide as simple as possible without sacrificing performance. This guide also included AoE rotations and provides details on when to use special talents and cooldowns.

Single Target Rotation

Conservation Priority: Execute the following priority while conserving mana.

  1. Arcane Missiles with 3 Arcane Missiles charges.
  2. Arcane Blast with > 93% mana.
  3. Arcane Missiles with 4 Arcane Charge and 1+ Arcane Missiles charges.
  4. Arcane Barrage with 4 Arcane Charge.
  5. Arcane Blast to build Arcane Charge.

Burn Priority: Execute the following priority while dumping mana.

  1. Arcane Missiles with 3 Arcane Missiles charges.
  2. Arcane Blast on cooldown.

The goal of the Arcane Mage DPS rotation is to properly balance your mana to maximize the damage buff from Mastery Mana Adept. This is done by moving between a 'Conservation' priority where you conserve mana and wait for Evocation to come off cooldown and a 'Burn' priority where you dump your mana down to 50% and then activate Evocation to recover your lost mana.

The 'Conservation' priority is used to keep your mana above 90% while you build Arcane Charge and wait for Evocation to become available. To execute this priority you should cast Arcane Missiles whenever you have 3 Arcane Missiles charges to prevent wasting any additional charges. After that, cast Arcane Blast when you have > 93% mana. Next, cast Arcane Missiles when you have 4 Arcane Charge and 1+ Arcane Missiles charges. Use Arcane Blast with 4 Arcane Charge and Arcane Blast to build Arcane Charge.

The 'Burn' priority is used only when the following conditions are met: 4 Arcane Charge, 3 Arcane Missiles, Evocation almost off cooldown, and > 90% mana. The goal of this phase is to dump your mana down to ~50% and then activate Evocation to return to 100% mana and then resume the 'Conservation' priority. Executing the 'Burn' priority is pretty simple as you simply cast Arcane Missiles with 3 charges and then use Arcane Blast on cooldown.

Arcane Power: Use Arcane Power on cooldown and stack with as many trinkets and buffs as possible. With Arcane Power active, spam Arcane Blast and Arcane Missiles. When Arcane Power ends, follow the normal priority.

AoE Rotation

At <= 4 enemies, continue with the single target rotation. With > 4 enemies, switch to a full AoE rotation where you consume Arcane Charge with Arcane Barrage and cast Cone of Cold on cooldown. Build Arcane Charge with Arcane Explosion.

Talents

Below is advice on how to use the performance-enhancing talents that were selected in this guide.

  • Supernova should be cast on cooldown to prevent charges from being wasted. However, if you need to deal additional burst damage then you can let the charges stack and cast Supernova twice in a row. Use this ability in both your single target and AoE rotations.
  • Rune of Power requires that you stand within the rune and recast Rune of Power as it is about to expire.
  • Prismatic Crystal creates a crystal that, when attacked, deals area damage. You should summon the crystal as often as possible and apply as much burst damage as possible to it including using your DPS cooldown.

Effective Cooldowns

These are effective cooldowns to try and incorporate into most all encounters.

  • Arcane Power Use as directed in the single target DPS section.
  • Evocation Use as needed to regain mana. Interrupt the delayed recovery if your mana goes above 90%.
  • Presence of Mind Use on cooldown and continue with your rotation as normal.
  • Time Warp Use as directed by your raid or party leader.
