DPS Rotation & Cooldowns for Balance Druid in PvE | Latest Patch 6.0.2

Select a gear item level to improve the accuracy and relevancy of this guide.

The following rotation guide was developed through extensive simulations and play testing with the goal of keeping the guide as simple as possible without sacrificing performance. This guide also included AoE rotations and provides details on when to use special talents and cooldowns.

Single Target Rotation

DPS Priority: Execute the following priority for optimal DPS.

  1. Starsurge when Lunar Empowerment is down and Eclipse energy is > 20.
  2. Starsurge when Solar Empowerment is down and Eclipse energy is > 20.
  3. Starsurge with 3 charges. Watch for Shooting Stars procs.
  4. Sunfire to maintain DoT and consume Solar Peak buff.
  5. Moonfire to maintain DoT and consume Lunar Peak buff.
  6. Wrath as a filler when in a Solar Eclipse.
  7. Starfire as a filler when in a Lunar Eclipse.

Note: Balance Druids have a very different rotation in Patch 6.0.2+ due to a major overhaul of the Eclipse resource system. This new system now allows Eclipse to cycle between Solar and Lunar cycles over time without any input from the player. In other words, you can no longer control the movement between Eclipse states, but rather must react to these changes when they occur.

Starsurge is the most important spell in the Balance rotation as the buffs it provides are essential to your DPS. Ideally, you will cast Starsurge when you are not under the effects of Lunar Empowerment or Solar Empowerment and you have > 20 energy in your current attunement. This is done so that when your Starsurge casts ends you will be near a full Eclipse to stack the max Eclipse damage with the Solar Empowerment or Lunar Empowerment buff provided by Starsurge. Also, it is imperative that you do not waste Starsurge charges and you should prioritize this ability whenever you hit 3 charges so that you do not waste any charges.

The next most important component to your rotation is to maintain your Sunfire and Moonfire DoTS. Ideally, you will refresh your DoTs when you have the Solar Peak and Lunar Peak buffs. Sunfire has a shorter duration and needs to be cast twice per Eclipse cycle: once when you pass 0 energy entering a Solar Eclipse and again right before before you leave the Solar Eclipse and pass 0 energy into a Lunar Eclipse. Moonfire has a longer duration and only needs to be refreshed once per Eclipse cycle right as you pass 0 energy and enter a Solar Eclipse or as you near 0 energy to exit the Solar Eclipse into a Lunar Eclipse.

Finally, Wrath and Starfire serve as your filler spells when you are not using Starsurge or refreshing your Sunfire and Moonfire DoTs. Wrath should be cast during the Solar Eclipse and Starfire during the Lunar Eclipse. With proper Starsurge management, most of your Wrath and Starfire casts should be buffed by Solar Empowerment and Lunar Empowerment respectively.

AoE Rotation

Sunfire is your top priority for AoE DPS and should be cast to refresh the DoT when it has < 8 seconds remaining. Thanks to Astral Showers, Sunfire applies its DoT to all nearby targets and does not need to be cycled across multiple targets unless they are spread far apart. Starfall is your next priority and should be cast as often as possible. Moonfire should be cycled across your AoE targets when you are unable to cast Starfall and Sunfire has > 8 seconds remaining. Finally, you can use Wrath and Starfire as filler spells based on your current Eclipse.

Below is advice on how to use the performance-enhancing talents that were selected in this guide.
