DPS Rotation & Cooldowns (5.4.8)
Maintaining a proper Rotation and using the right Cooldowns is essential to maximizing your Unholy Death Knight. Use this guide to optimize your single target and AoE rotations while learning how to get the most out of your cooldowns.
Single Target Rotation
Presence: Unholy Presence
DPS Priority: Execute the following priority for optimal DPS:
- Frost Fever Blood Plague Maintain at all times.
- Soul Reaper Unholy on target below 35% Health.
- Dark Transformation on cooldown.
- Death Coil to dump RP.
- Death And Decay with 2 Unholy Runes.
- Festering Strike with 2 Blood and 2 Frost Runes.
- Scourge Strike to dump excess Runes.
Your highest priority should be to keep both diseases active on your target all times. Apply them with Outbreak and refresh them with Plague Strike as needed. You do not need to use Icy Touch as Ebon Plaguebringer allows Plague Strike to apply Frost Fever. Also, because Festering Strike extends disease duration, often times Outbreak will be off cooldown when your diseases expire.
Your next priority is to use Dark Transformation immediately when it’s available. After that, keep Death And Decay down and Scourge Strike with your Unholy and Death Runes. Use Death Coil whenever your Runes are depleted, to consume Sudden Doom procs, or to prevent hitting the Runic Power cap.
Use Festering Strike when you are sitting on Blood and Frost Runes. When your target reaches 35% Health, you should prioritize Soul Reaper Unholy above everything except for maintaining your diseases.
Blood Tap: Unholy DPS benefits from Blood Tap and its regular return of Death Runes. This is most beneficial towards the end of a fight to maximize the use of Soul Reaper Unholy. Because Blood Tap is off the GCD, you can effectively manage it with a macro.

/cast Death Coil
/cast Blood Tap
With this macro you will automatically refresh a Death Rune every 2-3 Death Coil. Consume the Death Rune by following the single target DPS priority.
Use Unholy Blight to quickly spread diseases or Outbreak + Pestilence if Unholy Blight is not available.
For trash targets that die quickly, the AoE rotation basically follows the single target rotation. The only difference is to use Blood Boil with your Blood Runes.
For targets that will survive for 30 seconds or more, the AoE rotation has a few changes. After spreading diseases, quickly use Festering Strike twice to reset all of your Frost and Blood Runes as Death Runes. You now have 4 Death Runes to use on Blood Boil spam. These Runes will again refresh as Death Runes so that you can repeat the Blood Boil spam a second time.
These effective cooldowns are available if you chose them in your talent build.
These are effective cooldowns to try and incorporate into most all encounters.
