Hammer

Overview

The Hammer provides Guardians with great control, survivability, and DPS. It is a versatile weapon that works well in PvE, WvW, and sPvP gameplay. Proper use of the Hammer requires careful timing of the auto-attack chain with other abilities to maximize the Hammer’s potential.

Skill Combos

Auto-Attack: Hammer Swing -> Hammer Bash -> Symbol of Protection

The Hammer’s auto-attack sequence provides a potent DPS combo. Hammer Swing and Hammer Bash happen with a normal attack speed, but Symbol of Protection has a much slower attack speed. It is critical that you time this final attack so that it lands on your target. It deals a high amount of damage and sets up a strong burst DPS combo. Symbol of Protection has a small range to it beyond normal melee hit distance which gives you some flexibility in landing the attack.

Burst DPS: Symbol of Protection -> Mighty Blow

Mighty Blow is best used immediately after a Symbol of Protection as it allows for a nice bit of burst damage, but also activates the Combo Field: Light from Symbol of Protection to proc RetaliationRetaliationReflects damage back to an opponent when they attack you. Stacks in duration. on yourself and nearby allies.

Crowd Control: Banish +/- Ring of Warding

Banish allows you to interrupt your target’s abilities and knock them back while Ring of Warding traps your targets in a circle around you so that you can keep attacking them. Mighty Blow can be used after Ring of Warding to proc RetaliationRetaliationReflects damage back to an opponent when they attack you. Stacks in duration. on yourself and nearby allies.

Gap Closer: Zealots Embrace +/- Ring of Warding

Zealots Embrace is your primary gap closer as it will ImmobilizeImmobilizeRoots the target in place and prevents Dodging. Stacks in duration. your target. Stacks in duration. can be used to setup a burst DPS combo and/or give you time to cast Ring of Warding to further control your target’s movement.
