PvP, World vs World
PvP, World vs. World
World versus World (WvW) gameplay is a PvP mode which pits multiple servers against each other in an all-out battle for resources across a large open world map. This guide provides a basic overview of WvW gameplay and its rewards in Guild Wars 2.
What is WvW?
WvW is short for World vs. World (vs. World) gameplay. WvW is a type of PvP that its three different servers together in large open-world combat that revolves around capturing and defending objectives like resource camps, towers, keeps, and the almighty Stonemist Castle.
You may pull up the WvW menu with the [B] key. This menu is used to check the progress of your server’s WvW efforts and to join the battle yourself. To join the battle, click on the “Go to World vs. World” and select the map you wish to join!
How does WvW work?
The world of WvW is broken up into four sections. Each of the three participating servers gets a “Borderlands” map with 6 resource camps, 4 towers, and 3 keeps. The final map is the Eternal Battlegrounds which contains 6 resource camps, 12 towers, 3 keeps, and Stonemist Castle. Each of these maps supports up to 500 players for a total of 2,000 players that may participate in WvW at a time.
At its core, WvW is about taking and controlling objectives. Every resource camp, tower, keep, and castle under your server’s control is worth a certain number of points. These points are tallied every 5 minutes and added to your server’s war score. The server with the highest war score at the end of the two week battle wins the match.
How do you capture objectives in WvW?
Each objective has a capture area where players from the same server need to stand for a few moments to successfully capture an objective. However, this is easier said than done as objectives have better defenses based on their values. Resource camps and towers have little to moderate defenses. Keeps and Stonemist Castle have very high defenses.
Breaching the defenses around a keep or a castle requires the use of player built and operated siege weapons. These powerful weapons are capable of battering down the gates and walls that protect the capture areas inside towers, keeps, and Stonemist Castle.
When towers, keeps, or Stonemist Castle are captured, the guild that had the most participating members (relative to the size of the guild) will be able to “claim” the objective. A claimed objective will display the banner of the guild and offer additional WvW bonuses to nearby allies.
What are the rewards for WvW?
WvW offers a number of rewards for individuals and your entire server.
Individuals continue to earn experience points, karma, and coin in WvW. Loot drops in WvW are always at an appropriate level for your player. Also, the WvW maps provide access to every crafting resource in the game. Players can enter WvW at level 1 and progress all the way to 80 without ever leaving.
